Microsoft has announced they will discontinue support for Windows 10 effective October 14, 2025. This will include ALL versions of Windows 10. Microsoft cites the significant advances in security in Windows 11 as the prevailing reason. Windows 10 is the most common operating system PCS has found in office evaluations. While the OS will likely still function, there will be no support provided. Most importantly, the Defender security system will no longer be supported in the Windows 10 OS version.
FAQ
What does this mean for my practice?
Very clear answer – you will need to upgrade all your devices to the Windows 11 OS.
This is a hassle – why do I have to upgrade?
First, utilizing a non-supported operating system is a huge risk for your network and can result in data loss, breaches and damage to data. Second, Windows 10 based anti-virus/malware programs will not be supported. Most importantly, any non-supported OS is NOT HIPAA COMPLIANT.
I’ve used old operating systems for years with no problem. Why is HIPAA an issue?
HIPAA states that covered entities must make “reasonable attempts” to protect the security of patient information. While reasonable is not defined, it would be impossible to defend a breach of data related to a non-supported operating system. Significant fines for recent breach violations have been based on lack of updated and secure technology. Use of non-supported operating systems, residential class routers, and factory default firewalls have all been cited as no longer “reasonable”. Additionally, Windows 10 operating systems will no longer support Microsoft 365 apps.
What are my upgrade options?
Many manufacturers have built in FREE upgrades to Windows 11. You can check this out by opening Settings>Privacy and Security>Windows Update. If your device does not offer a free upgrade, strongly consider a newer device instead of downloading a new OS – for a fee.
What about my diagnostic devices running on Windows 10?
Manufacturers are or will be well aware of this issue and should be taking steps to upgrade the OS on their devices. It will be the decision of the manufacturer regarding timing, pricing or upgrades. Whatever their decisions, you will be obligated to ensure ALL your devices are operating on a supported OS.
Is there a need to do this now?
Microsoft states Windows 10 support will stop after October 14, 2025. We encourage everyone to take action now as the interactions between some of your existing software applications and especially equipment can require time to resolve.
